PAs are medical professionals who are trained and licensed to diagnose illnesses, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medication, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. PAs are trained in the medical school model but unlike physicians, most do not complete a residency. PAs instead work in collaboration (or supervision in some states) with a licensed physician. PAs experience over a year of intensive classroom training PLUS 2,000 hours of clinically supervised experience prior to graduation. They are also required to pass a rigorous board exam very similar to the USMLE Step 2 that physicians are required to pass. All but one PA program in the US utilizes a full-time classroom setting with simulations and labs (like physicians) instead of mostly online training (like most nurse practitioners or NPs).
PAs practice in every state and in every medical setting and specialty, improving healthcare access and quality.
